Unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers yesterday intercepted an 18-seater commercial bus carrying travellers and abducted all 17 passengers on board in Benue State.
The incident, which occurred at about 7:30 pm, took place along Otukpo-Oweto Federal Highway between Omutele and Ankpechi communities along the Otukpo-Adoka road in Otukpo local government area of Benue State.
It was gathered that the gunmen, after hijacking the vehicle, diverted it into a nearby forest with the passengers; a woman travelling with her baby was freed and left behind, while the driver sustained serious injuries during the attack.
Shortly after the attack, residents raised the alarm and advised other oncoming commuters to avoid the route for a possible attack.
The identities of the victims and any possible ransom demands were not yet disclosed as at press time.
The Benue State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the incident, with a promise to give more details in a statement.
In the meantime, commuters and motorists plying the road have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid night travels where possible, and report any suspicious movement to security agencies.
