No fewer than 15 children reportedly dead while many others sustained various degrees of injuries when a boat capsized at Shagari local government of Sokoto state.
It was gathered that the incident occurred at wee hours on Tuesday when the victims, all girls were said to be on their way to fetch firewood.
According to an eyewitness account, over 40 girls were on board when the incident happened.
A resident of the area, Muhammad Ibrahim, said 15 corpses were already recovered and local divers were still searching for the other girls or their corpses.
Speaking when he visited the scene, the chairman of Shagari local government, Alhaji Aiyu Abubakar, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the recovered bodies were being prepared for burial.
A similar incident happened in 2021 and 2022 where 13 and 30 people respectively died.
