APC Accepts Victory, Defeat With Equanimity, Says Basiru

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has said the ruling party remains committed to democratic principles and respects the integrity of the electoral process.

Basiru, who spoke during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, said the APC accepts both victories and losses with equanimity.

He said the party’s past electoral outcomes show its sportsmanship and adherence to the rule of law, noting that opposition parties often struggle to accept defeat.

“We lost in Osun State. We did not go to tribunal and we did not cast aspersions on integrity of INEC, but we won in Ekiti State, we celebrated it. Some other political party went to tribunal even when the figures show that APC won overwhelmingly,” Basiru said.

He added: “One of the things that our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said is that anybody that wants to savour the joy of victory in democracy must also be able to endure the pain when it loses. But in the case of Nigeria, it appears that opposition only wants to win, they don’t want to lose. We have had our fair share of loss both in the court and also in political context. And we have taken it, learned our lesson and moved on.”
