Don tasks Stakeholders with Concerted efforts to curb Dissemination of Parasitic infections in Developing Countries

 

In view of the socio- economic consequences of parasites on infected populations throughout the world, a University lecturer, at the Ekiti state University,EKSU, Ado-Ekiti, Professor Samson Olusegun Adewole has alerted critical stakeholders on concerted efforts to avoid further dissemination of parasitic infections in developing countries.

The Don added that parasitic infections are responsible for considerable morbidity and occasional mortality among the infected population .

He urged on detection and treatment of infected individuals with parasitic infection to avoid being served as sources of infection to others.

The Professor of Parasitology made these remarks while delivering the 105th inaugural lecture of the University titled: “Conflict Between Man and Parasites: Who Wins?”

Adewole called for Public awareness campaign programme targeted at annihilating the parasitic infection to be put in place with immediate effect.

The Don therefore advocated for construction of adequate toilet facilities and increase avidity on education of communities on the indispensable role of proper disposal of human wastes in terms of faeces and urine.

His words:
“Provision of protected water {Potable water to the masses by both local , state and Federal Government. Water for domestic use should be protected from contamination of human faeces and urine which may contain the eggs of Schistosomes.

“ Immigrants into the area, especially those from known endemic areas should be screened and treated if found effected

“ Vulnerable groups , such as fishermen, farmers, petty traders, adults and children and communities with high prevalence, should have access to regular screening , treatment and prevention measures promoted within their respective working environments”.

Adewole called on policy makers to recognize the parasitic infection as a focal public health scourge, urging them to promote and support control where and when necessary .

The EKSU Vice Chancellor professor Joseph Ayodele who congratulated the inaugural lecturer said the don has done ‘wonderfully well’.

The VC  added that the lecture provided recommendation to human health development stated that “as University, we shall continue to give opportunity to all for academic activities”
