Expert advocates Accurate Data for Successful Planning in Africa

An Expert in environmental planning, Prof. Joseph Kamuzhanje of Perch Inc Development Consultancy Services, Zimbabwe, said proper planning can only succeed in Africa with accurate data

Prof. Kamuzhanje while speaking at the 5th School of Environmental Technology International Conference (SETIC) 2024 at the Federal University of Technology, (FUT), Minna called on governments at all level to set legal frameworks to ensure proper planning.

Speaking on the theme, “Global Economic Revolution and The Resilience of the Built Environment in an Emerging World”, the Keynote Speaker, Prof. Kamuzhanje said, “The biggest challenge we have in Africa is to get reliable data and we know that, planning can ot succeed without data. When planning, you need to know the exact people you are planning for.

“The governments of various countries in our continent must make data available for proper planning; the legal framework and use of archaic legislation is one of the major challenges we face in Africa and you can see that most structures are not data driven”.

He further called on African leaders to privatise Research, saying “higher institutions that operate on planning principles should be well resources in terms of technology to provide real time data”.

Earlier in his opening speech, the host, Dean of School of Environmental Technology (SET), Prof. Olurotimi Kemiki said the Conference seeks to address pressing issues by exploring how the built environment can evolve to not only withstand shocks but also thrive in an ever changing world.

According to him “The global economic landscape is rapidly evolving, and the built environment, a core part of human civilization, must adapt a d innovate to remain resilient.”

While declaring the Conference opened, the Vice Chancellor, FUT, Minna, Prof. Faruk Adamu said the Conference is a testament of academic researchers who want to to sustain our environment.

The changing dynamics such as climate change and globalization have played a major role on how we shapen our emerging economic development.

The Vice Chancellor who was represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Mohammed Abdullahi said the conference will foster collaborative ideas “share your knowledge with one another so that we can collective contribute to the development of the world”
