…as Multiple Council Chairperson urges proactiveness of Govt in tackling Insecurity
The International Association of Lions Clubs, district 404-B2, has promised to rebuild the ophthalmology centre at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) and provide more equipments for the facility in a bid to make it one of the top notch health care centres in the country.
The Association stated this on Thursday at a Press Conference in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State Capital, in commencement of its 10th National Convention themed: “Serving Together to Succeed in the Land of Honour”.
The District Governor, Lion Professor Emmanuel Fagbohun, said the Club in its humanitarian services has intervened in the development of Health sector in Ekiti and other states which include: Building of Lions Diabetes Screening and Treatment Centre at EKSUTH, Millemium Eye Centre at University of Medical Sciences in Akure, Ondo State, Diabetes Screening and Training Centres in Osun and Lagos States, Eye Care Project in General Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo, Osun state.
Others are: Lions Clubs Diabetes Centre, Ogoja, Cross Rivers State, Eye Treatment Centre, General Hospital, Ikeja, Childhood Cancer Care Giver Home, FMC, Ebute Metta, Lagos. Olushola Dada Dialysis Centre, LUTH, Lagos State, Construction of Accident Clinics in Sagamu Aba and Zaria, among others.
His words, “We will rebuild part of the ophthalmology centre at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) and add more equipments to make it one of the best in the country. The plan is on and we hope to complete the project soon.”
Speaking on the purpose of the Convention, Fagbohun said it is to create awareness about the club, expand the membership space worldwide and organise capacity building programme to train members, and award outstanding members who have contributed immensely towards the growth and development of the Club.
With its membership strength in 200 countries, the association boosted of 400 clubs and 10,000 members in Nigeria, 1.4 million members worldwide with a view to expanding it to 1.5 million by 2027.
Highlighting the activities of the convention, members of the Club will embark on a parade from Ministry of Works to Olukayode Stadium on Friday before its grand finale of awards presentation to outstanding members on Saturday.
On insecurity, the Multiple Council Chairperson of the Club, Lion Abiodun Samuel urged governments at all level to be more proactive in preventing insecurity by using technological approach to track criminals.
He also urged the Ekiti State Government to commit more resources to security and also incorporate the local security networks into the security outfit to reduce criminal activities in the state.
“We should commend the security agencies to track down criminals. However, government should be more proactive to prevent rather than responding. They should use technology in tracking down criminals and commit more resources to security.” He stated.
