The Kaduna state Police Command said it has arrested a suspected gunrunner in Tudun Wada, Zaria local government area of Kaduna state and recovered 202 rounds of ammunition, believed to be meant for bandits in the forests.
Kaduna state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, said investigation is continuing to unravel the accomplices of the suspected gunrunner and bring them to face the wrath of the law.
He added that the Commissioner of Police CP Ali Dabigi has commended the personnel for their vigilance and ordered them to increase their visibility patrol.
“The Kaduna state Police Command has recorded yet another feat in the fight against crime and criminality in the state with the arrest of a suspected gunrunner and the recovery of ammunition.
“The incident occurred on the 17th January, 2024 at 2030 hours or thereabout when the Police Officers from Divisional Police Headquarters Tudun Wada, Zaria on Tactical Operation Duty (TOD) accosted a certain Musa Yusuf of Zurmi LGA Zamfara state, who was on a commercial motorcycle and in possession of a suspicious handbag.
“The said suspect alighted the motorcycle, abandoned his bag and attempted to escape. He was chased and apprehended and when a search of his handbag was conducted, two hundred and two rounds of 7.62 x 39mm live ammunition were retrieved.
“Early inquisition revealed that Musa Yusuf was on an errand for a bandit alias Emir in Zurmi forest. He was to receive the ammunition at Bakin Kogi in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna state and convey same to the said bandit. He has since accomplished the first stage of the mission by collecting the ammunition but was intercepted before delivering by the ever vigilant Police officers attached to Tudun Wada Zaria Division. Investigation is still ongoing and concerted efforts bring made to arrest his accomplices. After which the case will be charged to court.
“The Commissioner of Police Kaduna State Command, CP A.D Ali, psc has applauded the vigilant alertness of the Police officers and calls for more visibility policing. He charged operatives to dominate their area of responsibilities and make their presence felt. This he concluded will deter criminals from carrying out their nefarious acts in the state,” the statement said.
