The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has fixed Saturday, October 5th ,2024 as the date for the 2024 Local Government Elections
The announcement surfaced against the backdrop of a local government succession crisis fueled by the clash between Governor Siminialayi Fubara and lawmakers led by Martins Amaewhule.
In June, the state governor swore in 23 Caretaker Committee Chairmen for the Local Government Councils. This followed their successful screening by the State House of Assembly to fill vacancies left by the expiration of the former elected Council Chairmen’s tenure on Monday, June 17, 2024.
