Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on parents to instill modesty and strong moral values in their daughters.
She gave the advice in Abuja while hosting Muslim and Christian women at an interfaith Iftar and Lent breakfast gathering.
Mrs Tinubu also urged women to mentor young girls, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, stressing the need to support them through guidance, education and encouragement.
She challenged women to take up the responsibility of mentoring at least one girl in need.
“I challenge you to have a mentee with you — someone from an indigent background — pour into the life of a young girl, help them, even if it is to give a scholarship, encourage them and teach them good virtues,” she said.
The First Lady also emphasised the importance of decent dressing, urging parents to guide their daughters on self-worth and modesty.
According to her, exposing the body should not be regarded as beauty, noting that true beauty comes from within.
“Teach them how to dress well. Being naked is not beauty. Beauty comes from within,” she said, while also expressing concern over the influence of social media on young people.
Her remarks come amid growing public debate in Nigeria over what some citizens describe as indecent dressing among young women.
