Orji Kalu Begins Road Constructions Across Abia North
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has started the construction and rehabilitation of 28 roads across the five Local Government Areas of Abia North Senatorial District.
A press release in Abuja on Saturday revealed that the projects captured in the 2025 Federal Government Budget are spread across Bende, Isikwuato, Umunneochi and Arochukwu/Ohafia LGAs.
The statement noted that work has commenced at some sites, while contractors are expected to mobilise to others in the coming weeks in the various communities in the senatorial district.
According to Kalu, who chairs the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, SEDC, the interventions are aimed at opening up rural communities and stimulating economic activities.
“As part of my commitment to opening up our rural communities for agriculture, commerce and economic development, I have attracted new road construction and rehabilitation projects across Abia North,” he said.
“Work has already commenced on some of the roads, while contractors are expected to mobilise to other sites within the next one to two weeks.
“We shall continue to work towards improving connectivity, supporting our farmers and strengthening economic activities across our communities.”
The Senator added that other communities across Abia North have also been captured for road and other infrastructure interventions in the 2026 Budget.
In Bende LGA, the projects include University Boulevard Road in Umuisi and Bende, University Boulevard Erosion Site in Umuisi, and roads in Agbo and Umuenyere, Alayi.
Isikwuato LGA has Ezera Road, Umuelem Road, University Road in Uturu, Ovim Township Road, and roads in Acha and Ozara.
In Umunneochi LGA, road works are ongoing in Aroikpa and Eziama-Agbo in Nneato; Obinulo, Umuaku, Mbala, Amuda, Ngodo and Lomara in Isuochi; as well as in Lokpaukwu, with maintenance works across other communities.
Arochukwu/Ohafia LGAs will get roads in Ndiorieke-Eziafor, Isiugwu, Ebem Township, Abia, Akanu Ukwu, Okagbu, and the road from Ndi Inya to Idima.
Kalu said the new roads add to over 300 road and other infrastructure projects he has facilitated since assuming office in the Senate in 2019.
The projects, he noted, are expected to enhance the movement of people and agricultural produce, and strengthen links between rural communities and major commercial centres in the senatorial district.
Many communities in Abia North rely heavily on road networks for access to markets, schools and healthcare facilities.
