The Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ekiti State, Mrs. Oluwakemi Akomolede, has urged residents to support the new tax reforms, describing them as a key step towards stronger economic growth and fairer governance.
According to Mrs. Akomolede, Nigeria’s tax system has long faced challenges, including a narrow tax base, tax evasion, low compliance, and outdated collection methods.
These have reduced government revenue, slowing down infrastructural development, social services, and other critical programs.
She said:
“The new tax reforms is aimed to reducing dependence on oil by boosting non-oil revenue,
expand the tax base while easing the burden on low-income earners
Ensure fairness by requiring higher earners to contribute proportionately
Simplify tax laws to prevent confusion and multiple taxation
Strengthen tax administration through digital systems
Support small and medium-sized businesses and promote sustainable growth
Reduce government borrowing and align with global tax standards”
Mrs. Akomolede emphasized that awareness is key to the success of these reforms.
She noted that many citizens are still unaware of their rights and responsibilities under the new system, which could lead to misunderstandings and slow adoption.
The Ekiti NOA Director, call on all Ekiti residents to engage actively with these reforms, learn their obligations, comply fully, and encourage others to do the same. Together, we can ensure these changes to benefit everyone, she concluded.
