Nigeria Navy inaugurates new ships, inducts helicopters in fleet expansion

The Nigerian Navy at the weekend advanced its fleet with the introduction of three new Fast Patrol Boats (FPBs) and the induction of three advanced Augusta Westland AW109ST Trekker Helicopters.

The ceremony came up at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft Jetty in Lagos and it marks a pivotal step in enhancing the nation’s maritime security capabilities.

The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral EI Ogalla, welcomed dignitaries to the event, including the Special Guest of Honour, the Honourable Minister of State Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle (MON).

He expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his visionary leadership and unflinching support, highlighting that the acquisition of the critical assets underscores the administration’s resolve to safeguard national interests for economic prosperity in line with the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The newly commissioned NNS SHERE, NNS FARO and NNS IKOGOSI, along with the newly inducted AW109ST Trekker Helicopters, are poised to enhance the Navy’s operational efficiency. “The addition of these new platforms to our fleet will no doubt enhance the navy’s capability to dominate our maritime space and deny criminal elements freedom of action in our waters,” Vice Admiral Ogalla stated.

He further said that the new ships boast high endurance and are equipped with advanced surveillance and rapid-response capabilities. The helicopters also feature long-range surveillance and high endurance, which will significantly complement existing maritime domain awareness capabilities. This dual enhancement aims to bolster surveillance and response, thereby ensuring maritime security for increased economic activities in the maritime environment.
