Mismanagement: Nigeria’s Federal University Oye-Ekiti Staff Petition Minister, Call For VC, Council Chairman Ndoma-Egbe’s Removal

By Ige Sunday

Concerned staff of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) have written a petition to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, calling for an urgent and thorough investigation into what they described as gross governance failure and deep-rooted financial mismanagement in the university.

The petitioners also demanded the immediate removal of the University Council Chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), and the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina.

In the petition signed by Comrade Kamal Odunjo-Saka, which the Minister’s office officially acknowledged, the staff accused the duo of running FUOYE like a “private enterprise” with little regard for university statutes, financial regulations, and ethical governance standards.

They alleged that the alliance between Senator Ndoma-Egba and Prof. Fasina has crippled accountability structures and turned the once-promising institution into a haven for corruption, intimidation, and mismanagement.

According to the petitioners, the university is now plagued by widespread financial irregularities, including the fraudulent approval of funds, misappropriation of resources, inflated contracts, and diversion of internally generated revenue.

They alleged that decisions of the Governing Council are now routinely rushed through without proper deliberation, often in clear violation of due process and the university’s extant laws

The petition further alleged that statutory officers who attempt to question or challenge the irregularities are victimised, sidelined, or summarily transferred, while staff unions are systematically suppressed to prevent internal resistance.

The staff warned that the institution’s credibility is fast deteriorating, noting that FUOYE, once celebrated as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing federal universities, is now facing imminent collapse if urgent corrective action is not taken.

They expressed fear that the ongoing administrative rot could lead to loss of accreditation for some programmes, disruption of academic calendars, and possible industrial crises that may affect thousands of students.

The petitioners appealed to the Minister of Education to urgently intervene to protect the integrity of the Nigerian higher education system and restore transparency, accountability, and discipline in FUOYE’s management.

The statement read, “We, the undersigned Concerned Staff of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), wrote with a deep sense of duty and commitment to the survival of our university and the future of its students. This petition seeks to bring to your urgent attention the grave and worsening crisis that now threatens the foundation, integrity, and reputation of FUOYE.

“At the centre of this crisis is the unhealthy alliance between the Council Chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina. Their partnership has effectively reduced FUOYE to a private business venture operating outside the boundaries of accountability, university statutes, and financial regulations.

“The situation has degenerated into one characterised by corruption and financial recklessness, including fraudulent approval of funds, misappropriation of resources, and inflated contracts, illegality and disregard for due process, where council decisions are rushed through without transparency or proper deliberation.”

“Tyrannical governance and abuse of power where statutory officers are sidelined, unions suppressed, and checks and balances are destroyed.

“Honourable Minister, the implications of this are dire: FUOYE is rapidly losing credibility in the eyes of students, staff, stakeholders, and the Nigerian public. Our institution, once celebrated as one of the fastest-growing federal universities, is now at risk of collapse because of its reckless leadership and gross impunity,” they said.

According to the concerned staff, “It is against this backdrop that we humbly and urgently call for your intervention to: Safeguard the future of thousands of students who may soon find themselves stranded by accreditation losses and industrial crises.

They stated, “In the detailed petition attached herewith, we have documented specific cases of fraud, mismanagement, and tyranny supported by credible media investigations and union protests. These cases include the fraudulent N128 million research leaves of Prof. Fasina, the reckless approval for N900 million lupeju-Ekiti building purchases, wasting millions of naira on the Kigali trip, and the systematic exclusion of statutory officers from governance.”

“Your decisive action at this critical juncture will not only rescue FUOYE from imminent collapse but also send a clear message that impunity will no longer be tolerated in Nigeria’s educational system,” they added.
