A member of the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, on Thursday appealed to the Federal High Court in Abuja to show compassion to detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as the court prepared to deliver his sentence.
Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, made the emotional plea before Justice James Omotosho, describing Kanu as not only his constituent but someone he has known since childhood.
Introducing himself to the court, the lawmaker said he felt a duty to speak on Kanu’s behalf. “My lord, I am the direct representative of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. That is why you see me here almost every time, showing presence and solidarity with him,” he said.
Aguocha told the court that he and Kanu attended primary and secondary school together, adding that the prolonged legal battle had taken a severe toll on the defendant, who has spent years away from his family.
He urged the court to “temper justice with mercy,” warning that the outcome of the case carries implications for peace and stability in the South-East and the nation. “My lord, I plead for mercy, I plead for clemency, and I appeal for peace and stability — not just in the South-East, but in Nigeria. Nigeria is bleeding, and we must find common solutions to our common problems,” he said.
The lawmaker further appealed to the prosecution to consider the broader security challenges facing the country, noting that “other actors outside this courtroom are also doing worse.”
After hearing the appeal, Justice Omotosho convicted Kanu on all seven terrorism-related charges filed against him. The judge then stood the matter down, directing those who wish to witness the sentencing to return to the courtroom by 3:50 p.m.
