Human rights lawyer Serubawon dies at 60

A human rights lawyer and former chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association NBA, Ikeja branch, Adesina Ogunlana, popularly known as Serubawon is dead.

This was announced by the spokesperson of the NBA Ikeja branch, Akorede Lawal.

He said Ogunlana was known to have been committed to defending the helpless, voiceless and oppressed citizens, and was always at demonstration grounds to protest anti-people policies by the government.

The human rights lawyer was said to have died Wednesday, few days after he celebrated his 60th birthday with friends, and colleagues, which was marked with a lecture in late July.

A statement issued by the spokesman, Ikeja branch, Lawal, said, he was known for his pro-people stance on national issues.

He said: “The radical and outspoken Ogunlana prominently featured in many defining protests in Nigeria. From Occupy Nigeria in January 2012 to the 2020 #EndSARS rallies and the most recent #EndBadGovernance nationwide rallies.

“He was also the lawyer of #EndSARS petitioners at a panel set up to probe the incident at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos.

“Ogunlana, who expertly fused activism with his legal practice, was a force in the civic space whose vacant seat would be hard to fill.”, the statement said.
