No fewer than 21 have been reportedly dead in a flood that caused damages on Mokwa local council of Niger State
The Director General, Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) Abdullahi Baba Arah, in a statement, revealed that the agency received report of a deadly flood disaster that ravaged two communities – Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town of Mokwa local council.
Arah explained that the incident occurred last night during a torrential downpour of very high intensity that lasted several hours, leading to the surging flood water that submerged and washed away over 50 houses with their occupants.
The Director General noted that in response, the Agency, in collaboration with Mokwa Local Council Authority, the local divers and brave volunteers, was conducting a search and rescue operation to rescue survivors and recover corpses.
The agency said three survivors, a woman and her two children, are receiving treatment for the wounds they sustained at Mokwa General Hospital, while 21 corpses have been recovered.
Arah stressed that over 10 persons are still missing as the search and rescue operation is still ongoing.
