The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop an alleged move by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly to impeach him.
Ewhrudjakpo, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2219/2025, claimed the impeachment plot was triggered by his refusal to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Through an ex-parte motion, the deputy governor asked the court to issue interim injunctions preventing any attempt to remove him from office pending the determination of the substantive case.
Those listed as defendants include the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, the Speaker, the Inspector General of Police, the Director of the State Security Services, the Attorney General of Bayelsa State, the Chief Judge, and the Clerk of the House.
Justice Emeka Nwite, however, declined to grant the interim orders, instead directing that the defendants be put on notice. The judge ordered all parties to appear before the court on November 13, 2025, to show cause why the restraining orders sought by the deputy governor should not be granted.
Ewhrudjakpo, through his legal team led by Mr. Reuben Egwuaba, sought five interim injunctions, including one restraining the defendants from initiating or conducting impeachment proceedings against him for refusing to leave the PDP.
He further asked the court to bar the defendants from recognizing or appointing any APC member or other individuals as deputy governor pending the outcome of his motion.
Justice Nwite ruled that it would be in the interest of justice for the defendants to first be heard before the court decides whether to grant the requested preservative orders.
The case will continue on November 13, when the court is expected to hear arguments from both sides.
