Blackout: Iju Community Petitions AIG,NERC,Others

Some residents of College Road Community in Iju, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State have appealed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 17, AIG Yunus Akeera, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC and other relevant authorities to liberate the community from power failure.

The Petitioner in the letter dated 30th October, 2022 expressed serious discontentment over the action of the contractor who allegedly took away the damaged transformer to unknown destination, the development which they said has made the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) failed to restore power to their area in the last nine months.

The residents recollected that their
Automatic Voltage Regulator otherwise known as Electricity transformer was vandalized while a section of the machine was stolen away by Bandits on January 14, 2022, before a well spirited personality, Senator Ayo Akinyelure donated a new transformer to the community as part of his constituency project.

“On January 14, 2022, the transformer at the college Road Community AKN LGA, was discovered vandalized by bandits, A report was instantly made and inspectors from the BEDC Akure unit came to confirm the vandalization which they claimed was rampant in Akure North LGA”.

“No action was taken to replace the vandalized transformer until a philanthropist, a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Akinyelure Allover made seven new transformers available to replace the vandalized ones in his constituency. This included the vandalized transformer at the College Road Community, Iju”.

The people of the community in the petition criticised the contractor who handled the project which they said was supervised by the Senior Legislative Assistant (SLA) to the Senator who donated the transformer, Mr. Alo, over the removal of the former transformer which the BEDC demanded that must be made available to them before power could be restored to the community.

The residents however asked the AIG, the NERC to come to their rescue and prevail on the contractor who allegedly took away the damaged transformer, return it to the office of the BEDC Akure without any further delay and to ensure electricity is fully back in to the Community.
