The Nasarawa State Police Command has appealed to political parties to suspend rallies slated for October 10, 2026, ahead of the visit of First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Lafia.
Mrs Tinubu is expected in Lafia on Saturday as Special Guest of Honour at the All Progressives Congress, APC, North Central Grassroots Mobilisation Movement holding at Lafia Square.
In a statement on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the appeal was made on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, to prevent clashes between rival supporters, avert security breaches and ensure the safety of the First Lady and other dignitaries.
The Command said the measure would also prevent hoodlums from hijacking political activities and allow free movement during the visit.
While acknowledging the rights of parties to freedom of association and peaceful assembly, the police urged leaders and stakeholders to reschedule their gatherings.
“The Command recognises and respects the constitutional rights of all political parties to freedom of association, peaceful assembly and political participation. However, in the interest of public safety and peaceful conduct of political activities, we urge stakeholders to cooperate by rescheduling their gatherings to a later date,” the statement said.
CP Mohammed reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all political parties and upholding the rule of law, while appreciating residents and political actors for their continued cooperation.
