Residents of Akin Akeju Street, Opposite the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) area of Ado-Ekiti, have commended the Ekiti Government for its prompt response to the flooding that affected the community on Thursday.
The community leader, Chief Folu Oni, JP, gave the commendation in a statement issued on behalf of the residents in Ado-Ekiti.
Oni commended the state governor Biodun Oyebanji and relevant government agencies for their swift response and concern for the welfare of residents affected by the Thursday’s flood disaster.
He specifically appreciated officials of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and State Waste Management Agency for promptly assessing the extent of damage caused by the flood.
According to him, the incident resulted in significant loss of property and hardship for many residents.
He said the prompt arrival of government officials and their assessment of the situation had provided reassurance to the affected community.
Oni also commended the government for assuring residents that the expansion and channelisation of the canal in front of the community would receive priority attention to prevent a recurrence of the flooding.
He said the recurring flooding posed a serious threat to the lives and property of residents, stressing that the expansion and channelisation of the ongoing canal project in the area was critical to addressing the problem.
The community leader appealed to the governor to approve the project and facilitate the release of funds for its execution.
He said completion of the project would improve stormwater flow and provide a lasting solution to the recurring flooding in the area.
“On behalf of the entire Akin Akeju community, we express our profound appreciation to His Excellency, the Governor of Ekiti State, and all relevant government agencies for their prompt response and concern for our people.
“We remain hopeful that the proposed expansion and channelisation of the canal will receive immediate approval and funding, as its completion will go a long way in providing a lasting solution to the recurring flooding and protecting the lives and property of our people,” Oni said.
