The Jigawa State Police Command has launched an investigation into the sudden and unnatural death of a 60-year-old man at a hotel in Dutse, the state capital.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Shi’isu Adam, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday night, saying the incident was reported on July 21, 2026, at about 12:50 p.m.
According to the police, the deceased had checked into the hotel with a 20-year-old woman when he suddenly developed a medical emergency after requesting a meal.
Adam said the man reportedly began gasping for air shortly after the meal was served, prompting an emergency response.
“Upon receiving the distress report, police officers attached to the Yalwawa Division responded swiftly to the scene,” the police spokesperson said.
He added that the victim was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Dutse, where medical personnel examined him and certified him dead.
Following the incident, detectives secured the scene and carried out a preliminary investigation.
According to Adam, investigators recovered food items, beverages, a suspected sexual enhancement substance and other personal belongings from the hotel room for forensic examination and further investigation.
He said all necessary procedures were followed to preserve the exhibits and facilitate a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
After medical certification and the completion of necessary formalities, the deceased’s remains were released to his family for burial at their request.
The police also confirmed that the 20-year-old woman who was with the deceased at the time of the incident is cooperating with investigators and providing useful information to help establish the sequence of events leading to the man’s death.
The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State assured residents that the case would be handled thoroughly, professionally and impartially.
The command urged members of the public to avoid speculation or circulating unverified information that could create unnecessary panic or interfere with the ongoing investigation.
Police said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
