The disc jockey profession has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. Once regarded as a male dominated field, it has increasingly attracted talented female professionals who are making their mark on the entertainment industry.
From weddings and birthday parties to corporate functions and concerts, female DJs have become a common and welcome sight behind the turntables, bringing energy, creativity, impressive dance steps and musical versatility to audiences across the country.
Among them are DJ Cuppy and DJ Nana, who have established successful careers by allowing their musical talent, technical ability and stage management skills to define their brands. There is also DJ Kulex, DJ Nana, DJ Dimple Nipple, DJ Lambo and DJ Switch.
However, as the profession continues to evolve, conversations are emerging over the image some female DJs project while performing.
A party enthusiast, who spoke to on condition of anonymity, observed that while many female DJs remain highly professional, a growing number appear to place greater emphasis on appearance and provocative stage performances than on the art of music selection and mixing.
Many female DJs have earned widespread respect through professionalism, creativity and consistency without relying on provocative appearances. Some performers now wear extremely revealing outfits and incorporate suggestive dance routines into their performances in an apparent bid to attract attention, gain social media visibility or secure future bookings.
“Being a DJ is about entertaining people through music,” an analyst said. “Unfortunately, in some cases today, the performance is becoming more about body display than musical talent. Sometimes, guests mistake the DJ for one of the party attendees because of the way they are dressed.”
The trend has been attributed partly to changing societal values and the harsh economic realities that have intensified competition within the entertainment industry, pushing some performers to adopt unconventional methods to distinguish themselves.
“It’s becoming increasingly common to see some female DJs dressed in ways that overshadow their actual work. Some even add provocative dance moves to keep guests focused on them rather than the music,” the source added.
The issue has also generated debate on social media, where videos of some performances have attracted mixed reactions.
While some viewers criticised what they described as excessive or revealing dressing, others argued that performers should be free to express themselves and build their personal brands as long as they entertain their audiences effectively.
For many industry observers, however, the discussion extends beyond fashion. They believe professionalism, stage presence and musical expertise should remain the defining qualities of a successful DJ.
Nigeria has produced several respected DJs who built distinguished careers primarily on talent, consistency and professionalism.
Veterans such as DJ Sose, DJ Jimmy Jatt, DJ Humility and DJ XClusive helped elevate disc jockeying into a respected profession, earning recognition through their technical skills, discipline and ability to connect with diverse audiences..
