2027: NDC signifies interest on Coalition

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has signified willingness to engage in coalition discussions with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party expressed optimism that any eventual alliance would rally behind the party’s presidential ticket.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics”, the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, said the NDC remained open to conversations aimed at strengthening the opposition.

“As an opposition leader, we will be open. Our party, the NDC, will be open to conversations within that space,” Dickson said.

The former Bayelsa State governor, however, stressed that it would be premature to speculate on the outcome of any discussions, expressing confidence that any negotiations would ultimately favour the NDC’s candidates.

According to the serving senator, no individual should pre-empt the coalition process, noting that once the nomination stage is concluded, political actors would move into a new phase of engagement.

“I or anyone else should not pre-empt those discussions,” he said, adding that after the nomination process, “we move into another phase of discussions.”

Dickson also maintained that the party was not claiming superiority over other opposition platforms but remained hopeful that any coalition arrangement would eventually align behind the NDC.

His remarks come as the party continues to contend with legal challenges following a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside an earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.

The ruling has sparked widespread reactions from opposition figures and political stakeholders, with the party insisting it will challenge the decision through the appellate courts while continuing its political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
