An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Mr. Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member under controversial circumstances.
The deceased, identified as Victoria Ariyo, was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area. She reportedly died on Tuesday from complications linked to a terminated pregnancy.
Her remains have since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road.
Ariyo’s death has sparked serious allegations against Olalekan, who serves as the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South. Sources familiar with the situation allege that he was romantically involved with the deceased, claiming the relationship resulted in a pregnancy that was later terminated, leading to fatal complications.
The incident marks the second death of a corps member in the same local government area within a little over a month. In a separate case, another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under circumstances that are still unclear.
A police source confirmed that Olalekan is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at the command headquarters in Eleweran. The source also raised concerns over the propriety of a relationship between a supervising official and a corps member, noting that it is a key focus of the ongoing investigation.
When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that Ariyo’s death is under investigation by the SCID but declined to comment on the reported arrest or specific allegations against the LGI.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State NYSC secretariat has yet to issue an official statement on the incident or the detention of its official
