The Ogun State Government has approved the award of a ₦6,118,098,154.70 contract for the construction of a complex to accommodate the Abeokuta Division of the Court of Appeal.
The approval was granted during the State Executive Council meeting. The project will be developed on a 2.6-hectare site adjoining the existing State Judiciary Complex at Olipakala Village, via Kobape, within the Judiciary Cluster along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway.
This development marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing commitment to improving access to justice and bringing appellate court services closer to the people of Ogun State.
A review conducted by the Ministry of Justice revealed that the majority of appeals currently handled by the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal originate from Ogun State.
The absence of a division within the state has placed financial strain on litigants and legal practitioners and has, in some cases, led to delays in the resolution of appeals.
In readiness for the commencement of the Abeokuta Division, the State Government had earlier constructed six duplexes on 4,359 square metres of land at Ibara Housing GRA to serve as official residences for the justices. Additionally, twenty bungalows at Prince Court Estate, Kobape, have been designated for support staff.
In 2025, approval was granted by the President of the Court of Appeal for the Abeokuta Division to begin operations. This followed a special sitting of the court held in Abeokuta in May 2024, during which about ten panels convened and disposed of over 150 appeals within three days.
The ground breaking ceremony for the new Court of Appeal complex is scheduled to take place in the coming days, with completion of the project expected within twelve months.
The Ogun State Ministry of Justice remains steadfast in its commitment to justice sector reforms aimed at broadening access to justice, strengthening judicial institutions, and ensuring the efficient delivery of judicial services across the State.
