The Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Ibadan (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, has urged governments to do more in addressing hunger and poverty in the country.
Most Rev. Aledekugbe stated this in a message to commiserate with victims and families of those who loss their loved ones in the various stampeded that happened in different parts of the country last week.
In the statement personally signed by him, he declared that hunger and poverty are “the root causes of the incidents”.
According to the cleric, the spate of stampedes and lives lost during food distribution underscores the rising hunger and economic hardship that has engulfed the nation, adding, the incidents are highly avoidable
” The governments at all levels need to address the root causes of hunger and poverty. Failure to act decisively now will deepen the crisis, with devastating social, economic, and political consequences”, he said.
Most Rev Aledekugbe added,”These needless deaths underscore the rising hunger and economic hardship that has engulfed the nation.This is an indictment of the systemic failure of our government, which needs urgent attention”.
