Ekiti State Government has been commended for the proactive measures
channeled towards flood and erosion control in the State.
The Kaduna State Project Coordinator of the World Bank assisted
Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, Mr Jibrin
Dahiri gave the commendation during a peer review visit to Ekiti State
NEWMAP with some of his team members.
The Project Coordinator who now coordinates an offshoot agency of the
NEWMAP, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes
(ACReSAL), a new World Bank assisted Project, said the visit was to
study the process of purchasing swam buggy and it’s operations towards
tackling erosion in Kaduna.
According to him, the drastic efforts made by Ekiti State Government
in purchasing amphibian excavators to dredge channels and water ways
with a view to preventing perennial erosion menace was commendable and
worthy of emulation, hence, their choice of Ekiti for the study tour.
Earlier, the Ekiti State NEWMAP Project Coordinator Dr Akinyemi
Akinyugha commended the Kaduna NEWMAP team for being proactive in its
resolve to tackle issues of erosion headlong as exemplified in Ekiti.
He noted that several communities in Ekiti can now heave a sigh of
relief during rainy season as the amphibian excavators have been put
to maximum use with very impressive results.
Akinyugha commended the State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji for taking
proactive measures to dredge water ways even before warning from
weather forecasts of heavy rainfall this year.
Members of Kaduna team were conducted round places where dredging of
waterways were being carried out and also tutored on the best ways to
handle the equipment when purchased.
