The Supreme Council of Ikere Youths (SCIY), the umbrella body of all youth associations in Ikere Kingdom, has called on political leaders, stakeholders, and residents to put the collective interest of the community above partisan considerations in order to accelerate development.
The call was made by the President of the Supreme Council of Ikere Youths and Asoju Oba of Ikere Kingdom, Akin Afuye, while delivering his address at the 2026 Odun Oba Youths Gala Night, one of the major events marking this year’s Odun Oba Festival in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Addressing His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Adejimi Adu-Alagbado Agirilala II, the Ogoga of Ikere Kingdom, members of the Ogoga-in-Council, the Odun Oba Planning Committee, distinguished guests, and members of the community, Afuye described the annual festival as a celebration of Ikere’s rich cultural heritage and enduring unity.
He expressed appreciation to all sons and daughters of Ikere, both at home and in the diaspora, for their contributions to the kingdom’s growth, noting that many young people from the community continue to distinguish themselves in various professions across Nigeria and beyond.
According to him, the Supreme Council of Ikere Youths remains committed to promoting peace, unity, purposeful leadership, community service, and youth development through constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders.
Afuye identified the challenge of inadequate electricity supply as one of the critical issues confronting the community, stressing that stable power remains essential for economic growth, education, healthcare, and small businesses.
He disclosed that the council had consistently engaged government authorities and other stakeholders through advocacy aimed at improving electricity supply across Ikere Kingdom.
“While we appreciate the improvements witnessed in some parts of the community, we shall not relent until every part of Ikere enjoys a more stable and dependable power supply,” he said.
The SCIY President also urged young people to actively participate in politics and governance, arguing that sustainable development can only be achieved when competent and committed youths take up leadership responsibilities.
He emphasized that although political affiliations may differ, the development of Ikere Kingdom should remain a common objective.
“Our advocacy has always been that whenever issues affecting Ikere arise, we must speak with one voice. Political parties may differ, but our commitment to Ikere must never be divided. Development knows no political party; progress belongs to everyone,” he stated.
Afuye further appealed to all youth associations, political groups, community organisations, and social clubs within the kingdom to embrace dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation, warning that disunity remains one of the greatest obstacles to development.
He maintained that a united Ikere would be better positioned to attract investment, create opportunities for young people, and preserve its rich cultural heritage for future generations.
The SCIY President also reaffirmed the council’s commitment to championing initiatives in youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, educational advancement, environmental sanitation, peace-building, cultural promotion, and strategic partnerships with government and development organisations.
He used the occasion to appreciate the Ogoga of Ikere Kingdom for his fatherly support and encouragement towards the youths, describing the monarch’s reign as one that continues to promote peace, unity, and cultural preservation.
Afuye equally commended traditional chiefs, political leaders, professionals, business leaders, community development associations, philanthropists, sponsors, volunteers, security agencies, and members of the media for their contributions to the success of the 2026 Odun Oba Festival and Awards Ceremony.
He congratulated the award recipients, describing the honours as recognition of outstanding service, integrity, excellence, and commitment to community development.
The recipients of the 2026 SCIY Distinguished Service Awards included former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, H.E. Jacob Abiodun Aluko; Engr. Babatunde Morenikeji Awe, Pioneer Acting President of the Supreme Council of Ikere Youths; former Chairman of Ikere Local Government, Prince Adeleke Olasunkanmi Ogunbiyi (Synergy); Mr. Adu Clement Olarotimi, Chief Executive Officer of Acehill Private Schools, Ikere; and the late Deacon Adelodun Adewumi, honoured posthumously for his immense contributions as a renowned community leader.
In his remarks, the Paramount Ruler and Ogoga of Ikere Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Adejimi Adu-Alagbado Agirilala II, expressed appreciation to the youths for their commitment to the progress and development of Ikere Kingdom.
The monarch said he was proud of the achievements and positive contributions of Ikere youths in different sectors of national life, urging them to remain united and committed to the growth of their community.
He offered fervent prayers for the youths and the entire kingdom, praying for greater peace, progress, and prosperity in Ikere-Ekiti.
The colourful Gala Night formed part of activities marking the 2026 Odun Oba Festival and attracted traditional rulers, political office holders, community leaders, professionals, business executives, youth organisations, and other dignitaries from within and outside Ekiti State.
